Michael Essien rejects participation in the African Nations Cup 2013

Los Blancos midfielder refused to appear to defend Ghana because he wanted to settle contract issues

Michael Essien Ghana national team reportedly rejected an offer to participate in the African Nations Cup 2013. However, the 29-year-insisted that he was still committed to the Black Stars.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah had hoped former Olympique Lyon retainer reinforce Ghana to end his fasting for the past 31 years. However, Essien rejected the request because he wanted to ensure his future at the club level as loaned to Real Madrid by Chelsea.

"Essien has insisted that he is still committed to play for Ghana but he wants to settle the matter at the club after a move from Chelsea to Real Madrid on loan," he told BBC Assiah.

"Now he is playing regularly for Madrid and it takes time to develop themselves."
